So you’ve scoured the web and decided you want to start a blog.
There are a huge amount of options on ways to start earning from home these days, as highlighted in my article “How to create an extra income from home“.
But you’ve settled on blogging, or at least are interested in getting started.
But where do you start?
Getting a Blog up and running is one of the easiest ways to start your online career/hobby.
Just jump in right? get one up and running and start typing?
That is one way to start, and the way in which a lot of people have started.
Let’s say you’re a little more serious about it though.
Let’s take a look at some of the best practices for you before you jump in.
What are you passionate about?
One of the first things you need to do when looking to start a blog is to decide what you are going to blog about.
Easy, you might say.
Fair enough, if you know what you want to do and you’re passionate about the subject then please, carry on.
If, however, you ever want to monetize your blog and start making some income from your work, then you need to delve a little deeper.
Your passion is a great place to start.
What do you love?
Do you love photography and have the passion and knowledge to share what you know with others?
Anything that provides value to readers is excellent.
If you can write content or how-to guides then go for it, nice subject.
Are you a passionate gamer?
Doesn’t matter if it’s Xbox, Playstation, PC or even mobile, if you can write content, reviews or guides on the subject and be passionate, you’ll do great.
Do you have a lot of knowledge about computing?
How to build them, what parts you recommend, how to use them.
As long as you enjoy the subject and can write about it then you can make it work.
Are you a budding fashionista, or just enjoy keeping up with the latest trends.
Look anywhere online and on social media, this is one of the most popular topics so if you’re going to write about it, make sure it’s good.
Love personal finance and/or investing?
Want to help people get control of their finances.
Don’t, that’s my subject lol.
It’s another very popular subject and as long as you can provide value, the more the merrier.
You can see just from this, there are so many topics that you can write about, and that’s just looking very high level.
We’ve not really got into your niche yet, just your topic of interest.
Whichever one you choose, make sure you:
- Are passionate about the subject
- Have a good working knowledge of what you are talking about
- Have time to research if required
- Understand how you are going to monetize it (if applicable)
Monetizing your blog is not the be-all and end-all.
I know a lot of bloggers who write for the love of it and if that is you, then my hat goes off to you.
I love it and am enjoying it more and more each day.
However, as later posts in the series will show, Blogging costs money.
How much depends on you and how deep you want to dive in but hey, that’s for another post.
For now, let’s just say you’ve found what you want to blog about.
That’s it then, let’s start writing.
Now quite, let’s take a look at the next step.
Tighten down your niche
Once you have decided on what topic you want to write on, we need to tie down the niche somewhat.
A google search for photography, for instance, brings back 13,350,000,000 results.
Try finding your blog in amongst all of that.
By this point, you may already know what “specific” area of the topic you want to write about.
If so that’s great, but this will still be of use to you.
Keywords everywhere is a Google Chrome and Firefox plugin that shows you how many times a specific keyword has been searched for on average, over the past 12 months.
It will also show you how much that keyword is “worth” to advertisers and how many advertisers are running ads for that keyword on Google Adwords.
Take a look, get the Plugin and type in your chosen topic, it’s ok, I’ll wait.
So how many did you get?
I’m going to guess it was in the 1,000,000’s if not 1,000,000,000’s.
So here’s what I got for photography.
You can see, 13,350,000,000 results, not great.
However, that keyword is searched for 1,220,000 times a month on average.
That, along with awesome content would do nicely.
But let’s see if we can narrow down the competition a little, shall we?
Let’s try “Photography for beginners”.
Although the average monthly volume has gone down to 12,100 searches a month, it is a lot more specific.
The more specific you can be, the more chance there is of getting visitors who are actually looking for what you’re providing.
You are also getting more likely to rank on Google search.
That’s a whole other post so stay tuned for that one, just remember to make sure your SEO is on point.
So the last search we will do is to try and narrow it down even more.
You can do this with your subject, just let your mind run wild and type whatever you can think of.
If you’re struggling, on the right of the results page you will have noticed suggestions, try and use one of them.
Our last search then will be “Digital photography for beginners”.
Let’s see how this came out.
So our last search has narrowed down the field a little more.
We still have over 87,000,000 results, but it’s a lot better than when we started.
You can continue to drill down into this and find the niche within your chosen topic with the least competition, but for now, I think you get the point.
Blogging is a great pastime and ultimately if you can stay in the game for long enough and dedicate enough time to it, a great money earner.
The key when getting started is just like we’ve talked about.
- Know your topic
- Love your topic
- Stay up to date on your topic
- Post regularly
- Enjoy it
A passion for what you are doing shines through in the work you do.
Provide value to people and the income will come later.
I hope you’ve found your topic and indeed your niche.
